I got interested in psychology and psychotherapy from my father who was a psychologist and psychoanalyst. I later majored in psychology in college and worked as a nursing assistant in a psychiatric hospital before going to graduate school. I also completed my own psychotherapy. I became fascinated with trying to understand why and how people avoid awareness of their own feelings and how that avoidance can lead to a host of difficulties in relationships, school, and work, robbing people of the capacity to enjoy life. I learned that people can go a long way to resolving their problems by becoming aware of their feelings, thoughts, and attitudes and sharing them with a psychotherapist.
Training and credentials
I received my PhD in clinical psychology from The New School for Social Research in New York City. I have postdoctoral training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, integrative psychotherapy, and the treatment of addictive disorders.
I am a tenured professor of psychology at the City University of New York where I have taught, conducted research, supervised students' clinical work, and run a doctoral program in clinical psychology and a program in addiction studies.
I continue to teach, conduct research, provide clinical supervision, and publish and present on topics in psychology, in addition to providing individual psychotherapy for adults with a wide range of psychological problems.
Awards and Fellowships
I am engaged in the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis and have received several honors and awards, including being the recipient of the prestigious Research and Scholarship Award from The Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2015.
